Post to Weekend Response

Reno Beamer:

King Hrothgar should be able to feel confident enough to stand up to Grendel. Grendel is not able to harm Hrothgar anyways, by the power of God.  But shown in the poem, Wulfgar had to come in and be the hero. "My people have said, the wisest, most knowing/death was my errand and the fate they had earned.”  (145-155) And when this hero came, this showed that maybe the hall will have some sort of victory.

Wulfgar continued to lead an army into war with Grendel.  He was fighting off many monsters that came his way.  "Another monster crowded around me continually attacking.  /their blood spilled out on the sand.”  (290-300) Grendel was coming into a fight that he was not winning, and that wasn’t making him any happier.

When Unferth came in to help with the challenge,  Grendel only held it against his believes that he would be punished if Unferth  killed.  “To be true.  And there is more: you murder your brothers/ you’ll suffer hell’s fires, Unferth, forever tormented.”  (320) This is Grendel’s way of provoking the better people into not winning.
